Welcome to The Blog! My First Post

Well here we are! Welcome to the Vanilla & Oak blog.

It’s not everyday that you write your very first blog post, so I wanted to use this post as a bit of a milestone, to document where I am now, and tie in a “meet the designer”.

So, here we go!

My name is Chanel and I am the founder/designer/creative behind Vanilla & Oak Design Studio.

Vanilla & Oak will officially be a year old here in a couple months, but let me take you take you back to the beginning.

Growing up, I loved travelling. My mom and I would always go on a holiday at least a few times a year. So naturally growing up, I wanted to work at a resort.

After graduation, I applied for hotel management at university and, well, got rejected. My math mark wasn’t high enough, and was told I would need to upgrade it to be accepted.

I said no thanks, and started looking for jobs online.

I scoured Craigslist in the closest tourist-driven destination close to home I could think of, Whistler BC, applied for a front desk job, got the job on the spot, and moved to a magical little ski resort three days later.

But after 7 years of working in different hospitality roles, I couldn’t shake a nagging feeling that there was more to life than just going into an office-like setting everyday and selling rich people vacations that I would never be able to experience myself.

I hated it.

So craving a creative outlet, I decided I was going to start a blog, and then monetize my blog, and leave my job. Well, spoiler alert, that didn’t happen, but what did happen was much more magical.

Before I wrote a single blog post. I decided I was going to design the blog itself first. I wanted the best looking blog out there. And slowly, it just clicked.

I loved designing, making myself a logo, and building my website and my blog.

And as soon as my first blog design was done, I just started to create another, and another, and… well you get the picture.

I knew I had finally found something I loved doing, and it didn’t even occur to me that I could make money, yet a business, out of doing it.

So long story short, I followed that passion, discovered an entire world of branding and website design, invested in every course and online resource I could find to teach myself, and that brings us back to now.

And if you’re still reading this, I just wanted to say thank you so much for being here. I can’t tell you how much it means to me.

So without further adieu, happy reading!
